Digital Rock Physics: Applications in fluid flow and rock deformation

【摘要Abstract】:

岩石物理在油气开采、地热开发、碳封存等地质力学应用中,核心面临两个问题:多孔岩石中流体流动受何控制,以及变形如何演化并局部化,形成促进或阻碍流体流动的结构。大量野外观测与室内实验证实,流体流动与应变局部化存在复杂耦合;渗流理论与分岔分析为分析这类现象提供了框架。随着三维孔隙成像技术发展,数字岩石物理可通过体素模拟刻画相关过程,本次报告将首先综述砂岩流体流动的计算研究进展。

围压条件下实时成像多孔岩石变形极具技术挑战,需研发对同步辐射光 “透明” 的三轴试验装置。研究团队在欧洲同步辐射装置(ESRF,ID19 光束线)开展多孔灰岩实验,实现 100 兆帕围压及可控孔压与温度,通过 X 射线显微断层扫描获取孔隙结构时序三维图像。数据分析阐明了岩石变形峰前峰后细观力学过程,数字体相关分析(DVC)与孔隙尺度有限元模拟,分别揭示了岩石破坏机理、孔隙非均质性对压实局部化的控制作用。

数字岩石物理在高分辨率解析砂岩、灰岩等储层岩石水力学与力学行为方面潜力巨大,但将其应用于页岩等结构更复杂的非常规油气资源时仍存技术挑战,这些难题可借助技术与计算手段的进步逐步攻克。

In rock physics, two fundamental questions exist in geomechanical applications (hydrocarbon extraction, geothermal development, carbon sequestration, etc.): what controls fluid flow in porous rocks, and how deformation localizes to form flow-enhancing or inhibiting structures. Extensive field and laboratory studies confirm the complex interplay between fluid flow and strain localization, with percolation theory and bifurcation analysis as analytical frameworks. Advances in 3D pore imaging enable digital rock physics to model these processes via voxel-based simulations, and the talk first reviews recent computational advances in sandstone fluid flow.

Real-time imaging of confined porous rock deformation requires a synchrotron-transparent triaxial rig. Experiments on porous limestone at ESRF (beamline ID19), with up to 100 MPa confinement and controlled pore pressure/temperature, used X-ray microtomography to acquire time-lapse 3D pore images. Data analysis elucidates pre- and post-peak micromechanical processes; DVC and pore-scale finite element modeling reveal failure mechanisms and the control of pore heterogeneity on compaction localization.

Digital rock physics shows great potential in revealing reservoir rock behaviors, but applying it to complex rocks like shale faces challenges, which can be overcome by technological and computational advances.

报告人简介Speaker Biography

黄庭芳教授是香港中文大学地球与环境科学系荣休教授、石溪大学研究教授。在香港预科毕业后,他负笈美国,先后在布朗大学、哈佛大学和麻省理工学院获学士、硕士和博士学位。2013年回港任职前,在纽约州立大学石溪分校任教三十年,期间曾任该校地球科学系主任和研究生副院长,与澳大利亚国立大学的Mervyn Paterson教授共同编写了“Experimental Rock Deformation, The Brittle Field”的第二版,与陈颙院士和埃克森美孚公司的刘恩儒博士编写中文著作《岩石物理学》。在香港中大任教期间,黄教授同时为中国地震局地质研究所的特聘教授、中国地球物理学会的岩石物理专业委员会副主任。他是美国地球物理联合学会(AGU)的会士(Fellow),曾于1986年获得美国国家岩石力学委员会基础研究奖,于2010年获得欧洲地球科学联合学会(EGU)Louis Néel奖章,以表彰他在岩石物理和地震力学方面的贡献。在2017年他被美国土木工程学会(ASCE)选为在哥伦比亚大学的Maurice A. Biot讲座的主讲者。

Prof. Teng-fong Wong is Emeritus Professor of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Research Professor at Stony Brook University. After completing his preparatory studies in Hong Kong, he pursued further education in the United States, earning his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from Brown University, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, respectively.

Prior to returning to Hong Kong to take up an appointment in 2013, he taught at Stony Brook University, State University of New York, for thirty years, during which he served as Chair of the Department of Geosciences and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. He co-authored the second edition of Experimental Rock Deformation, The Brittle Field with Professor Mervyn Paterson of the Australian National University, and the Chinese-language textbook Rock Physics with Academician Chen Yong and Dr. Enru Liu of ExxonMobil.

During his tenure at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Huang also held the position of Distinguished Professor at the Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration, and Vice Chairman of the Petrophysics Committee of the Chinese Geophysical Society. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). He received the Basic Research Award from the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics in 1986, and the Louis Néel Medal from the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in 2010 in recognition of his contributions to rock physics and earthquake mechanics. In 2017, he was selected by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as the Maurice A. Biot Lecturer at Columbia University.
